American woman peace activist killed by IDF
bulldozer in Gaza

By Arnon Regular, Haaretz Correspondent, and Agencies
............................................

An American woman peace protester was killed Sunday by an IDF bulldozer, which ran her over during the demolition of a house at the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip. Another activist was wounded in the incident.

Rachel Corey, 23, from Olympia, Washington, was killed when she ran in front of the bulldozer to try to prevent it from destroying a house, doctors in Gaza said.

"Corey was killed in the al-Salam neighbourhood when an
Israeli bulldozer covered her with sand as she stood in front of a bulldozer," said Dr Ali Musa, a doctor from the al-Najar hospital in the southern Gaza Strip. He said she died from skull and chest fractures.

IDF spokesman Captain Jacob Dallal said her death was an accident. The U.S. State Department had no immediate comment.

Greg Schnabel, 28, from Chicago, said the protesters were in the house of Dr. Samir Masri.

"Rachel was alone in front of the house as we were trying to get them to stop," he said. "She waved for bulldozer to stop and waved. She fell down and the bulldozer kept going. We yelled 'stop, stop,' and the bulldozer didn't stop at all. It had completely run over her and then it reversed and ran back over her."

Since the start of the Intifada, groups of international protesters have gathered in several locations in territories, setting themselves up as "human shields" to try to stop IDF operations.

Corey was the first member of the groups, called "International Solidarity Movement," to be killed in the conflict. Schnabel said Corey was a student at Evergreen College and was to graduate this year.

He said there were eight protesters at the site, four from the United States and four from Great Britain. "We stay with families whose house is to be demolished," he told the Associated Press by telephone from Rafah after the incident.

What are the requirements to become a "human shield" ?

That's a very impressive show of humanity. How about we begin advocating the murder of the men and women in the armed forces? Are they any MORE human?

This reveals something more sinister. Namely, that Israel couldn't care less about US citizens and should not be considered an ally of the United States.

I'll admit, the title of this thread is a little over the top. But that song just popped into my head .

I was disassembling your snide remark:

This woman had more balls than you'll ever have.

Side-stepping other questions here, I'm afraid the young lady did not realize that while that tactic might work here in the U.S., in a foreign country you can't be sure. I'd also like to point out that if one is placing themselves in front of a bulldozer in essentially a war zone, then one must accept the consequences. Maybe it was an accident (I doubt it), but people who put themselves in front of heavy machinery better account for the possibility that a gear might get stuck before the dozer can stop, and that someone mighty pissed off may be driving it. You take your life into your own hands when you choose to interfere in situations like this.

p.s. She's dead now. She won't ever have an opportunity to discuss anything ever again - I assume she knew it could happen. It all comes down to choices.

The 911 hijackers had balls. The scores of homicidal bombers killing noncombatants in Israel had balls. Kamikaze pilots had balls. Showing bravery doesn't make one right any more than it makes one wrong. This woman got herself into a situation beyond her understanding and subsequently paid the ultimate penalty. She's not a hero, just an misinformed student whose life was wasted. Hopefully others in that group will get the point that human shields' lives aren't worth much when dozens of other lives are at risk as well.

So you only have courage when you know you're being courageous, when you know you will lose your life?
I'm sure the human shields know that they might die. I don't think that certainty is what makes one courageous; its not as simple as that.
Sometimes a coward can be heroic.

Ironically enough, I feel that, at this hour, war will prove you wrong. It will solve nothing.
How can death possibly answer a question? Dead men cannot think, talk, or move to the nearest ballot box to throw a president from office, for that matter.

Ask the people in afaganistan if war is the answer, ask the french if war was the answer in 1945...War was the answer in 1776, war was the answer in 1865 otherwise you would not have an NBA.

Funny thing is, the US was in Iraq's position in 1976; David vs. Goliath.
And it was the French that helped us against the British.

Ask the people in afaganistan if war is the answer

Have you? Has anyone? Did anyone? NO.

no...the US is goliath.
That's the way that most of the world sees it, as well. IMO we have forgotten the adage that "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". Our intentions (those of the people) might be great. But in most cases that of the govt. is and is seen as being different.
Geraldo is not a BIG lefty. he's a solid member of the establishment. He wouldn't wave a finger at the US govt. if he was told to...
